Phase I of the Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project began spring 2006. Massman Construction Company is the contractor for Phase I construction-widening of the bridge support structure.
Boh Bros. Construction Company of New Orleans, LA has been awarded the contract for Phase II of the Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project. Phase II is scheduled to begin summer 2006 and will include railroad modifications of select railroad supports to facilitate new east bank and west bank approaches.
The first two phases of construction on the Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project are not anticipated to impact traffic. The majority of this work will be performed from the water or levee area. |

The Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project will be constructed in four phases and will be completed by the end of 2012. The phases included in the project are:
Phase I: Main Support Widening (piers)
- Four river piers and one land pier will be widened to support additional lanes
- Construction began spring 2006.
- Construction scheduled to be complete by summer 2008
Phase II: Railroad Modifications
- Modification of select railroad supports to facilitate new approaches
- Construction scheduled to begin summer 2006
- Construction scheduled to be complete by fall 2007
Phase III: Main Bridge Widening (truss)
- Existing truss widened on either side to accomodate new travel lanes and shoulders
- Construction is expected to be let in early 2007
Phase IV: New Approaches Construction
- Existing two 9-foot wide travel lanes on main bridge will be widened to three 11-foot lanes in each direction with 8-foot outside shoulders and 2-foot inside shoulders
- New east bank and west bank approach roadways and structures
- U.S. 90 through traffic at Jefferson Highway and Bridge City Avenue will be on elevated structure
- Traffic circle at Jefferson Highway and existing Jefferson Highway overpass will be replaced with signalized intersection
- Bridge City Avenue traffic circle will be replaced with signalized intersection
- Construction is expected to be let mid 2007
