The Florida Avenue Bridge Project is currently in the planning and design phase. As soon as local concerns and recent funding issues are incorporated into the designs, a construction schedule will be established and made public.
The project is funded by the TIMED four-cent gas tax established in 1989 and will remain in effect until the entire project is complete. A series of bond sales is helping accelerate construction of all TIMED projects.
The new high-level Florida Avenue Bridge Project will provide safe and reliable access between St. Bernard and Orleans parishes over the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal (IHNC) for New Orleans East residents.
The new bridge is also vital to recovery efforts for the area following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. When construction begins in 2008, the process will create new jobs and opportunities for local residents recovering from the devastation of the hurricane. In addition, transportation improvements feed economic development and business growth, which will provide long term support to the area.
